A Setback for Linux
There is a shocking news that Larry McVoy decided to stop giving BitKeeper (distributed software configuration management tool) free for Linux developers. BitKeeper was exhaustively used by the Linux kernel developers. This will have a major impact on the schedules. Linus Torvalds is developing a new tool known as ‘gits’ which would act as a replacement for BitKeeper. But, it would take a long time for it to become as rich as BitKeeper. Best wishes for gits. Good…thats what happens when you follow the Open Source regime!! Makes no business sense what so ever !!
Why should anybody give something they have spent many years and thousands of dollars to develop for free ?? that too with the source code ??
This reflects my exact sentiments :
‘Let me know when your rent and college tuition are free, when gas and groceries are free, and when your girlfriend decides that you having no money is a great idea. When all that is true I’ll get on the bandwagon, too.’
As always….Bill Gates Rulezzz…

Well, OSS have pros and cons like anything in this world have. Anyway, withdrawl of BK has come in the right time and a lot of Linux developers are happy that a closed source tool is going to get replaced by a open source tool, the ‘gits’. It will take some (some->inf) time to make ‘gits’ as powerful or more as BK.
No matter Bill rules or Linus rules, we have to work, earn and pay our taxes and who that rule is not going to affect us much
What do you think about that?
